The Harp

History

The harp is a historically and culturally significant symbol of Ireland. From the Middle Ages until the 18th century, the harp was one of the most important musical instruments in Irish culture, both in popular and ceremonial music.

The “Irish Harp” or “Gaelic Harp” is known for its specific shape, which distinguishes it from modern or continental Harp. It is played with fingernails, and the strings are made of wire, giving it a unique metallic tone.

During medieval times, professional harpists were highly respected in Irish society and enjoyed high status. They were often employed by kings and nobles to play music on formal and celebratory occasions.

However, with the repression of Gaelic culture and the Irish language under English domination, the harp was progressively associated with Irish resistance against England. The English authorities considered harp music so subversive that they even banned the practice of the instrument.

The Irish harp revival occurred in the 20th century, as part of the wider revival of traditional Irish music. Today, the harp remains a popular instrument in Ireland and enjoys a notable presence in Irish folk music.

Symbol

Additionally, the harp is an official national symbol of Ireland, appearing on the Irish Presidential Seal and Irish Euro coins. The image of a stylized harp, known as the “Brian Boru Arp”, is the logo of the famous Guinness beer. Brian Boru, the last High King of Ireland, is often associated with the harp, although history does not confirm that he ever played the instrument.

In summary, the harp is a powerful symbol of Irish cultural identity, representing the country’s rich musical history and its struggle for cultural and political freedom.

In summary, the harp plays an important role in Irish jewellery, both as a cultural symbol and as a source of design inspiration. It helps to define the unique identity of Irish jewellery on the global stage and contributes to its popularity both locally and internationally.

Samuel Beckett Bridge

The bridge in question is the Samuel Beckett Bridge in Dublin, Ireland. It is a beautiful piece of architecture and engineering that has become one of the city’s most iconic landmarks.

The bridge, inaugurated in December 2009, was designed by architect Santiago Calatrava, who was inspired by the image of a harp – Ireland’s national instrument – to create the bridge. It is made up of 31 cables extending from a curved “pole”, creating an image that resembles that of a harp lying on its side.

The bridge is named after Samuel Beckett, one of the most celebrated Irish writers, winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1969. His most internationally known work is the play “Waiting for Godot”.

The Samuel Beckett Bridge is a movable bridge that rotates to allow vessels to cross the River Liffey. The bridge, which spans 120 meters, is one of the few in the world that rotates around a fixed axis, thanks to a specially designed rotation mechanism.

In addition to its functional purpose, the Samuel Beckett Bridge has become a symbol of Dublin and is a popular spot for tourists. The view from the bridge lit up at night is particularly impressive and has become an iconic image of the modern city of Dublin.
